Chilia Veche is the most important starting point for any serious expedition into the northern Delta. A short distance away by water, the impressive Letea Forest Nature Reserve welcomes visitors with a surprisingly exotic, tropical feel. Prepare for a walk among trees more than 500 years old, Mediterranean plants surrounded by sand dunes, a true paradise for countless turtles, lizards and wild horses. Access to Letea Forest is permitted only with a guide and on certain routes.

Roșca – Buhaiova Nature Reserve

Located in the north of the Delta, the Roșca – Buhaiova Nature Reserve is a genuine complex of lakes and ponds, marshes and islets stretching between Letea and Chilia. It is a legally protected area that hosts the largest colony of pelicans in Europe, along with other charming wild species such as otter, mink, ermine, egret, white lotus and yellow water lily. An expedition to explore the area will offer you an unrivalled encounter with all that nature has to offer.

Bird watching

A reliable refuge for more than 60% of the world population of pygmy cormorants and 50% of red-breasted geese, as well as for the largest number of Egyptian white pelicans and Dalmatian pelicans in Europe, the Danube Delta is a true paradise for bird watchers. With over 3,540 kilometres of rivers, canals, marshes and lakes surrounded by trees and reed islands, the Delta hosts the largest number of bird colonies on the continent. More than 300 species, from cormorants to white-tailed eagles, arctic geese and glossy ibis — some coming from as far away as China and Africa — make the bird-watching season a true spectacle lasting from early spring to the last days of summer.

Churches and monasteries

A meeting place for the most spectacular miracles of nature in Europe, the Danube Delta is truly one of the blessed places on Earth. The areas around the village of Chilia Veche bear witness to this, serenely blending the finest of nature with two of the most interesting places of worship in Romania.

Located right next to Limanul Resort, the church of Chilia Veche is the second largest in Romania after the Black Church in Brașov, dating from 1854 and used as a military observation post during the Second World War. The village also shelters a very old Lipovan church with valuable icons. Just 5 km from Chilia Veche, the Saint Athanasius monks’ hermitage (Stipoc Monastery) is the only monastery in the Danube Delta, surrounded by flowers and built entirely of wood, in the renowned style of the Moldavian monasteries.
