A successful holiday in Romania includes, at least once in a lifetime, a stay in the Danube Delta — not only because it is the second largest on the planet, but above all because our Delta is the best preserved in all of Europe.

The Danube Delta formed five thousand years ago in a gulf of the Black Sea. Today it shelters in its waters numerous endangered and legally protected plants and animals, as well as 25 different types of ecosystem.

Three branches and 5,200 km² of pure nature

Where it flows into the Black Sea, the Danube splits into a complex network of canals connecting three main branches: Chilia, Sulina and Sfântul Gheorghe, each with its own "personality" and attractions. If you choose to visit the youngest of the three — Chilia — you may glimpse the largest colony of pelicans or the wild horses of Letea Forest. The reeds along the water's edge shelter 30% of Europe's glossy ibis population.

The touristic Danube Delta

The population of the Danube Delta does not exceed 15,000 people, but the tourists drawn to this area by its wonderful nature considerably increase that number. While locals live in simple, reed-covered houses, tourists have several types of accommodation at their disposal. Besides the usual hotel or guesthouse rooms (and, why not, even in people's own homes — they are more than happy to have guests!), lovers of water trips can also rent small boats (2-10 people) to quietly observe the beauty of nature.

12 habitat types and many endangered species

The Danube Delta has the third greatest biodiversity in the world, surpassed only by Australia's Great Barrier Reef and the Galápagos Archipelago in Ecuador. This land of waters, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is home to more than 5,500 species of animals and plants sharing a territory of almost 600,000 hectares. More than 50% of the Delta's biosphere is intact, and the whole area is divided between tourist locations and zones where tourism, hunting and fishing are strictly regulated.

Accommodation in the Danube Delta

As a tourist, you can choose between several types of accommodation in the Danube Delta. You can spend your holiday in one of the true "resorts" on the Delta's banks, enjoying luxury accommodation, a five-star room and round-the-clock room service. Or you can choose one of the many small and welcoming guesthouses, which offer far fewer facilities. For an authentic experience, you can stay overnight in the modest but well-kept homes of the locals.

Whatever you choose for your stay in the Danube Delta, you should know that the Delta, with its breathtaking landscapes and astonishing biodiversity, is the paradise of any nature-loving traveller.
